A Domestic Violence Restraining Order (DVRO) is against someone you have dated or had an intimate relationship with or against a close relative.

Below is a list of relationships under which a DVRO can be filed.

A Gun Violence Restraining Order (GVRO) can stop an individual from having, owning, or buying any firearm (gun), firearm parts, ammunition, or magazines.

Only certain people can ask for a GVRO if they think an individual is dangerous or in a state of self-harming.
Below is a list of people who can file.

*Immediate family: Spouse, domestic partner, parent, child or any person who regularly resides in the household, or did within the prior six months.
  • An adopted child is treated the same as a biological child for both DVRO’s and GVRO’s.
  • Divorce or the death of a spouse ends the relationships created by a marriage unless a child of that marriage is still living. In the case of a living child, the marriage is treated as if it still exists. For example, if the parties are divorced and they have one or more living children, the parties will continue to be related.
